FOR ACTIVITIES
- The
UK's Consumer Price Index (CPI) declined to
1.9% in August.
- Cobham
gained 0.10% after reporting that its first
half pretax profit rose 6.1% to £50.7
million, as turnover rose 2% to £349.5
million.
- National
Express lost 1.69% after reporting that its
first half pretax profit declined by almost
half to £37.2 million.
- Xansa
lost 52.03% after warning about its profits
due to "extremely tough" market
conditions.
- Oil
shares closed lower as Iraq's acceptance to an
unconditional return of UN weapons inspectors
took out the war price premium.
- Tesco
lost 5.32% after reporting first half pretax
profit that rose 13% to £545 million, as its
turnover rose 11% to £12.7 billion.
- British
Energy lost 33.33% after The Financial Times
reported that putting the company in
administration will end up being the right
thing to do.
- SABMiller
gained 0.22% after announcing that its
earnings for the current 5 months are ahead of
last year's.
- Johnson
Matthey gained 0.57% after announcing that its
first half profits will beat last year's.
- The
Big Food Group gained 5.19% after the Wall
Street Journal reported that the company's
management might make a buyout bid for the
company.
- Celltech
Group lost 6.74% after reporting first half
pretax profit that rose 36% to £10.1 million,
as turnover rose 16% to £155.6 million.
- BAE
Systems lost 7.04% after CS First Boston cut
its price target.
- Rio
Tinto gained 1.65% after paying A$53.8 million
for a further 3% of Australian coal miner,
Coal & Allied Industries. Rio Tinto now
owns 76% of Coal & Allied Industries.
- Kingfisher
and Skyepharma both gained on the eve of their
earnings reports.
- AFTER
CLOSE: Oracle reported fiscal Q1 earnings that
met, but missed on turnover estimates.

gained 14.52% after announcing that it has
terminated its takeover talks, and the company
sees fiscal Q1 trading in line with estimates.
- Mining
shares gained due to the continued war
tensions between the US and Iraq, and the
weaker South African Rand.
- Vodafone
Group gained 1.94% on an Italian news report
that it will raise its bid fro France's
wireless operator, Cegetel, by £1 billion to
£9 billion.
- Reuters
Group gained 4.68% after the Sunday Mail
newspaper reported that it is about to sign a
major contract with the US' largest brokerage
house, Merrill Lynch.
- Marconi
gained 12.68% after announcing the
introduction of a new Switch-Router, and that
it has already made a sell to the US
government.
- Invensys
gained 3.52% after its briefing with analysts
left them with nothing but positive comments.

- AFTER
CLOSE: The US Federal Reserve FOMC left interest
rates unchanged, with a bias to a future cut,
if the weakening in the US economy continues.
US markets closed lower on the news.
- The
UK Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 2.0%
in July.
- Premier
Farnell gained 5.29% on a CS First Boston
upgrade.
- Oil
shares and prices gained after Iraq stated
that it sees no reason why UN weapons inspectors
should return to the country - this is more
ammunition to an already escalating war of
words between the US and Iraq.
- Banking,
pharmaceuticals, and telecommunications shares
all gained.
- Barratt
Developments and the Berkeley Group all gained
after Schroder Salomon Smith Barney upgraded
them.
- Advertising
and media shares closed lower after France's
advertising giant, Publicis, reported weaker
than expected results late Monday.
- Waste
Recycling lost 18.17% after reporting full
year pretax profit that rose 7.4% to £21.7
million. Waste Recycling is concerned that
increasing legislation and standards will
affect its bottomline.

Mutual gained 2.22% after JP Morgan upgraded
it to "market perform", based mostly
on its valuation.
- British
Energy lost 29.81% after one of its Nuclear
Reactors was put out of service for safety
checks.
- Firs
fighting equipment maker, Kidde, gained 6.90%
after UBS Warburg upgraded it.
- Clothing
retailer, Matalan, lost 8.63% after announcing
that its Director of Finance, Ian Smith, is
resigning at the end of this fiscal year.
- Ncipher
lost 0.96% after reporting first half losses
rose almost double to £2.81 million, on revenue
that declined 26% to £6 million. Ncipher expects
the next of the year to be rough.
- Bradford
& Bingley gained 3.34% on the eve of its
earnings report.

the decline on the eve of the US Federal Reserve
FOMC meeting. Gainers included: Acambis Plc,
Antisoma Plc, Autonomy Plc, BOC Group Plc, British
American Tobacco Plc, Celltech Group Plc, Dixons
Group Plc, eBookers Plc, Gallaher Group Plc,
GUS Plc, Hiscox Plc, International Power Plc,

REASONS
FOR ACTIVITIES
- BAA
Lost 3.51% after reporting that passenger
numbers rose only 0.4% at its Airports. The
North American bound traffic continues to
slide, but was offset by improvements in the
Domestic and European traffic. Airline shares
lost on the news.
- EMI
Group lost after an industry survey showed
that second quarter records sales were down.
- Powderject
Pharmaceuticals lost 23.47% after recalling
its BCG Tuberculosis Vaccine in the UK.
- Granada
lost 5.0% after the weekend press reported
that its CEO, Steve Morrison, might be leaving.
Media shares were generally lower today.
- Old
Mutual lost 5.69% after announcing first half
operating profit that declined 16% to £381
million, which met city estimates. Old Mutual,
which still generates most of its revenue
from South Africa, lost due to the weakening
Rand against the Pound Sterling. Insurers
closed lower on the report, and the poor earnings
reported last week by Royal & Sun Alliance
(RSA).

- HBOS
closed unchanged despite positive comments
from CS First Boston. Banking and financial
shares were lower as all eyes and ears are
focused on the US Federal Reserve FOMC action
after the close of the LSE regular trading
tomorrow.
- Biotechnology
shares gained after the Financial Times reported
that major UK biotechnology companies have
been negotiating secretly to establish a Cancer
treatment company to compete globally.
- Telecommunications
and oil shares closed lower, while defensive
shares like tobacco gained.
- eBookers
gained 4.21% after reporting fiscal Q2 losses
that narrowed to £3.56 million. eBookers also
expect fiscal Q3 to be a strong quarter too.

the poor earnings report from Royal &
Sun Alliance (RSA). RSA closed lower again
today.
- Oil
prices and shares gained on continuing tensions
between the US and Iraq.
- Hotel
shares gained today after Millennium &
Copthorne reported stellar earnings yesterday.
