REASONS
FOR ACTIVITIES
- Abbey
National Bank lost 7.85% after issuing a full
year earnings warning. Other banking shares
were affected by the warning.
- ARM
Holdings gained 3.67% after announcing a deal
with Philips Electronics and Adelante Technologies
to develop a uniform mobile systems chip.
- Medisys
lost 13.51% after reporting first half pretax
loss that widened £2 million to £5.1 million,
while turnover rose 77% to £18.4 million.
- Elan
Corp. gained 21.93% as the Irish drug maker
tries to rise above its accounting woes.
- Pearson
gained 0.37% after business information company
Incisive Media confirmed it is in advanced
talks to acquire Pearson's FT Business Ltd.
unit. Incisive Media's trading was suspended
after the news.
- Reuters
Group lost after its ECN unit, Instinet, paid
£350 million to acquire rival, Island.
- Ryanair
Holdings gained 7.26% after reporting full
year pretax profit that rose 44% to 150.4
million Euros, while sales rose 28% to 624
million Euros.

- Gallaher
gained 2.92% after The Business newspaper
reported over the weekend that British American
Tobacco is considering a £5.3 billion bid
for its smaller rival. British American Tobacco
lost 0.06%.
- Defensive
shares like food, utilities and drugs found
favour today.
- BAE
Systems lost 4.41% after confirming that it
is in talks to acquire US defence and auto
parts manufacturer, TRW.
- Energis
gained 1.43% after The Observer newspaper
reported that bondholders of the troubled
company intend to block the new £90 million
bid for the company. Energis owes bankers
about £650 million.
- Exel
lost 1.67% despite announcing that its Tradeteam
unit has won a contract with Interbrew valued
at £500 million to distribute drinks for the
giant brewer in the UK.

- Banking
media, and oil shares were some of the hardest
hit shares.
- Technology
shares were hit hard after Intel warned about
its revenue outlook. Fellow chip maker ARM
Holdings lost 5.22% as it faces a possible
relegation from the FTSE 100 Index next week.
Logica, also facing relegation from the premier
index, gained.
- Vodafone
Group and MmO2 led wireless mobile phone shares
lower after US based Airgate PCS lowered its
subscription growth outlook. Telecommunications
shares were generally under pressure on growth
concerns.
- GlaxoSmithKline
gained 2.80% after the US Food & Drug
Administration (FDA) gave its irritable bowels
treatment drug, Lotronex™, limited approval.
- Insurers
were pulled down after UK financial regulators
fined Royal & Sun Alliance for not meeting
pension selling review deadlines.
- Mobile
phone parts maker Filtronic lost 12.0% after
wireless chip maker, RF Micro Devices, warned
due to poor orders from major customer, Nokia.

company Tate & Lyle gained 5.52% after
stating that it will be back into profitability
for the fiscal year ended March.
- Defensive
shares like utilities found favour today.
- BskyB
closed lower on concerns that parent, News
Corp, might pay US$800 million for Vivendi
Universal's struggling Italian pay-TV business.
- Kingfisher
lost 0.63% despite receiving an overwhelming
approval from its shareholders for its £3.2
billion for French Do-It-Yourself (DIY) chain,
Castorama.
- Medisys
and First Choice Holidays gained on the eve
of their earnings reports next week. Carpetright
and Harvey Nichols, also reporting next week,
closed lower.
- Bookham
Technology gained on the eve of its Annual
General Meeting (AGM) next week. Autonomy,
Kingfisher and Telewest Communications, also
having AGMs next week, closed lower, while
Laura Ashley closed unchanged.

also downgraded the shares to a "hold".

& Wireless lost 1.85% after a Financial
Times article stated that the company's chairman,
Sir Ralph Robbins, might step down as early
as this week.
- Xansa
gained 12.14% on positive comments and recommendations
from UBS Warburg.
- Baltimore
Technologies gained 20.0% after its chairman
stated that the company's 2002 goals are reachable.
- Sports
content distributor, Teamtalk Media, gained
25.0% after announcing that it rejected a
hostile £10 million takeover offer from UKBetting.
- Alfred
McAlpine lost 0.68% despite stating that its
trading for the year is in line with city
estimates, and that its order book has almost
doubled to £2.2 billion.

- Retailer
Budgens gained 10.97% after announcing late
Friday that it received a takeover bid from
its largest shareholder, privately held Musgrave.
- BskyB
lost 4.48% on news that the UK government
has a broadband spectrum tax (Dish Tax) in
the works. Also today, BskyB announced that
it exercised its options to sell its stake
in KirchPayTV, which BskyB values at about
$1.2 billion (1.3 Billion Euros).
- London
Stock Exchange (LSE) gained 5.62% after announcing
that it is talking to other entities as part
of its strategic review, and should anything
develop, it will make it known.
- Lattice
Group, National Grid, and Powderject Pharmaceuticals
gained on the eve of their earnings reports.

Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee
(MPC) left May Repo (Interest) Rates unchanged
at 4.00%.
- BG
Group lost 0.49% after reporting fiscal Q1
operating profit of £220 million on a turnover
of £669 million. BG Group also announced it
is taking a one time charge of £50 million
to cover the new North Sea Oil profits tax.
- Morse
gained 8.31% after reporting fiscal Q3 sales
that beat estimates at £127 million. Morse
also stated that it expects a strong fiscal
Q4 results.
- Druck
Holdings gained 14.33% after stating that
it might get a takeover offer from its current
talks.
- Banking
shares closed lower after UBS Warburg downgraded
banking giants Lloyds TSB, HSBC Holdings,
and Standard Chartered Bank to a "hold".
- IPO
Today: HMV closed lower on its first day of
restricted trading. Full trading will commerce
May 15th.
- Oil
shares gained as crude oil prices gained on
the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX).
- Xenova
Group gained 3.36% after reporting a fiscal
Q1 loss of £2.8 million, an increase of £500,000
over the year. Xenova also announced that
its cash and liquid assets rose £9.1 million
over the year to £17.1 million.

estimates.
- Royal
& Sun Alliance lost 3.02% despite reporting
a smaller fiscal Q1 loss of £72 million.

Industrial Production declined to 99.2 in
April.
- Shell
lost 0.20% after paying C$29 million to acquire
about 20% of privately held Canadian bioethanol
company, Iogen.
- Easyjet
lost 8.36% after announcing today that it
is acquiring British Airway's German domestic
unit, Deutsche BA, instead of GO. British
Airways gained 2.47%.
- Carlton
Communications and Granada gained on rumours
they have restarted their merger talks. Media
shares gained again today due to the legislative
plans to open up the market to foreign ownership.
- Surfcontrol
gained 1.38% after reporting a smaller fiscal
Q3 earnings, but reiterated that it will be
profitable in Q1 2003.
- Pub
operator JD Wetherspoon gained 5.17% after
announcing that its fiscal Q3 like-for-like
sales rose 5.7%.
- Anglo
Irish Bank gained 5.66% after reporting first
half pretax profit that rose 27%, and announced
that it will be able to purchase its European
Private Banking unit in 18 months.

- Astrazeneca
gained 2.46% after its US drug development
partner, Barr Labs, reported a better than
expected fiscal Q3 results.

Holdings gained 7.14% after reporting fiscal
Q1 pretax loss that rose to £4.76 million.
The company also announced the immediate resignation
of Ashley Ward as CEO. Anthony Finbow was
named CEO effective immediately.
