  • WEEKEND NEWS: The Sunday Telegraph reported that Royal London is in talks to acquire Britannic for about £1.6 billion.
  • J Sainsbury lost 2.38% despite announcing that its Q4 UK sales rose 7.6% due to the Easter holiday.
  • Powderject Pharmaceuticals gained 4.06% on news that it has entered into an agreement with Bavarian Nordic, and it will also take a stake in Bavarian Nordic.
  • HBOS gained 3.29% after Deutsche Bank raised its 2002 and 2003 earnings outlook by as much as 3%. Banking shares generally closed higher on upbeat comments from Merrill Lynch.
  • Mobile phone shares closed lower on rumours that fund management company Janus is selling all its 27 million shares in Nokia.
  • Capita Group gained 1.19% after acquiring City Financial Group in a deal valued at around £4.6 million.
  • Compass Group gained 1.70% after paying £3.6 million to acquire Gruppo Events.

  • SA Breweries gained on news that it will close its over $5 billion Miller Brewing acquisition deal as early as next week, as Interbrew has indicated it will not make a counter bid.
