FOR ACTIVITIES
- UK
Unemployment Rate rose to 3.2% in December,
as 3,200 jobs were lost in the period.
- Torotrak
gained 18% on news that it has signed an agreement
with Japanese Automotive parts maker Equos
Research to test its Infinite Variable Transmission
(IVT) Technology.
- UK
chip related shares closed lower after Intel
lowered its Q1 outlook and cut capital spending
by 25% for the period.
- Marks
& Spencer lost 0.14% despite reporting
that for the 7 weeks ending January 12th,
its like-for-like sales rose 8.3%.
- IT
services firm Xansa lost 15.47% after warning
about its current year's outlook.
- Defensive
shares like utilities and tobacco gained.

year 2001 pretax profits from assets management

sales rose 46%, due to strong growth in the

shares closed lower after the US' JP Morgan
Chase & Co. posted its first quarterly
loss in 5 years, due to credit exposure to
the Argentina and Enron implosions.
- Text
messaging shares CMG and Logica lost 6.02%
and 6.21% respectively after Vodafone Group
selected Ericsson to provide its mobile phones
with text messaging. Vodafone Group closed
lower too.
- Invensys
and Cookson Group closed lower after US electronics
maker Tyco International issued a warning
due to a poor electronics market.

gained 0.32% after reporting that its like-for-like
sales for the 7 weeks ending January 5th.
rose 6.2%.
- Vodafone
Group gained 2.33% after announcing that it
has disposed of its non-core German assets
inherited from Mennesmann. ABN AMRO's upgrade
to buy yesterday also helped.
- MmO2
gained 3.53% due to its successful placement
of corporate bonds this week. MmO2 also announced
a development deal with US handheld device
company, Handspring.
- Cookson
Group lost 0.59% despite stating that its
trading conditions stabilized in December.
- British
Airways gained 0.57% on news that it is in
talks with troubled Polish national carrier,
PLL LOT, about joining its OneWorld Alliance.

- Marconi
lost 10.32% after announcing that its fiscal
Q3 sales declined 37% over the year to £706
million. Marconi also announced plans to cut
4,000 jobs, and the company doesn't expect
a recovery this 2002.
- Compass
Group gained another 3.15% after Goldman Sachs
included it in its "UK recommended list".
- Diageo
gained 1.82% after announcing plans to spend
64 Million Euros to build a second production
plant for its hot selling Bailey's Irish Cream™
Liqueur, which is expected to see sales doubling
in the next 5 years.
- Defensive
shares like Mining, Utilities and Tobacco
gained.
- Banking
shares gained, despite a downgrade of Barclay's
to a "hold" by UBS Warburg.
- Ashtead
Group lost 19.38% after warning about its
full year results, due to poor US market conditions.
The US accounts for 70% of Ashtead's business.

Beatty gained 5.63% after announcing that
it won a US contract for a new infrastructure
development valued at $220 million.
- Vodafone
Group lost 3.88% as telecom shares came under
pressure today. ABN AMRO upgraded Vodafone
to a "buy".
- London
Bridge Software gained 1.46% after announcing
that its full year 2001 pretax profits will
meet city estimates, and that it expects a
stronger demand for its products all of 2002.
- HSBC
Holdings, which is estimates to have a £2
billion exposure to Argentina's financial
crises, led banking shares lower.
- J
Sainsbury lost 2.15% despite reporting that
its Q3 like-for-like sales rose 6.4%.
- GUS
lost 1.14% after reporting that its Q3 like-for-like
sales at its Burberry™ unit declined 2%, while
its Argos™ unit saw an increase of 14%. GUS
reaffirmed its decision to demerge Burberry™
this June.
- Defensive
shares like Utilities and Tobacco gained.
- Caterer
Compass Group gained 0.72% after wining a
10-year, $200 million a year catering and
facilities management contract with US oil
major, ChevronTexaco. Compass Group will handle
catering services at its worldwide facilities.
- Sage
Group lost 0.76% despite comments from its
CEO that the company's US sales improved in
December, and it expects UK to pick up in
the next 6 months.
- Biotechnology
firm, XTL Biopharmaceuticals gained 18.48%
after announcing that its Hepatitis C experimental
drug is performing well in clinical trials.
- Marconi
and Cookson Group closed lower on the eve
of their trading updates.

- Enterprise
Oil gained 3.63% on news that Italian oil
giant ENI is thinking about reopening negotiations
to acquire it.
- Financial
services firm Man Group gained 5.12% and helped
other managed funds operators to close higher
after announcing that it raised over $590
million in client money for its 2 new funds.
- European
Telecom gained 6.25% despite announcing first
half pretax losses of £5.1 million, and it
expects things to be tough in the near term.
- Matalan
gained 11.82% after reporting that its like-for-like
sales for the 6 weeks ending January 5th.
rose 9%.
- Astrazeneca
gained 1.30% after CS First Boston upgraded
it to a "buy" recommendation, and
raised its price target to £36/share.
- Logica
lost 5.27% after its largest customer, J-Phone,
the Vodafone owned Japanese mobile phone unit,
announced that its capital spending this year
will be only $2.3 billion, about half the
normal amount. J-Phone buys text messaging
systems from Logica.
- Vodafone
Group gained 1.82% after announcing that it
will spend only £1.6 billion of its budgeted
£3 billion for infrastructure investments.
- Esporter
gained 6.02% despite announcing that it will
miss Q4 revenue targets, and it will be taking
a £5 million charge. On the upside, the health
clubs operator confirmed that it has been
approached.
- BAA
gained 0.68% after announcing that traffic
at its Airports declined only 6.4% in December.
- AFTER
CLOSE: US markets closed lower after Federal
Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan cautioned
about too much optimism about the economy
in the near term.

REASONS
FOR ACTIVITIES
- The
Bank of England kept its Repo (Interest) Rates
unchanged at 4.00%.
- Computacenter
lost 0.29% after stating that it will meet
city estimates, but its business has a while
to pick up.
- Staffware
gained 6.29% after stating that it will break
even for the second half of 2001, but it returned
to profitability in Q4 2001. Staffware sees
its business improving.
- Some
defensive shares were okay today.
- Selfridges
gained 2.05% after reporting that its flagship
Oxford Street store saw a 6% increase in sales
over Christmas.
- Reuters
Group lost after its Demerged unit, Instinet,
reported that for December, its share dealing
volume declined 30%. Media shares were generally
lower too.
- Construction
company AMEC gained 1.43% after stating that
it will meet the city's full year estimates.
AMEC also stated that contract bookings for
the long term have risen to £5 billion.
- House
of Fraser gained 6.78% after reporting that
its like-for-like sales grew 7.2% in the past
7 weeks.
- Vodafone
lost 3.66% and pulled the FTSE 100 for 2 pieces
of news: Reports are that its joint venture
with Verizon Communications of the US doesn't
seem to be doing well, and the Financial Times
reported that, Vodafone is getting unsolicited
offers for Arcor, the fixed-line business
in Germany it inherited after acquiring Mannesmann.
